It will ask you to think of your grandmother, your grandfather, their grandparents, and then keep going back... past the rice terraces, past the dap-ay councils, past the first human hands that ever touched this soil, all the way back to a world so ancient that no living memory can hold it. A world where your ancestors did not yet know they were going to become the people from the mountain. A world where they were still somewhere else entirely, looking up at a different sky.

This is the story of where the Igorot people came from. Not the version from a textbook. Not the official summary on a laminated classroom poster. The full, startling, gorgeous, slightly mind-bending version. The one that connects you, sitting in Baguio or Bontoc or Sagada or Tabuk right now, to a chain of human beings that stretches back hundreds of thousands of years across the entire breadth of Asia.

Before There Were Igorots, There Was Something Else in These Mountains

Long, long before the people we now call Igorot ever climbed into the Cordillera, this land was not empty.

Something was already here.
In 2019, scientists announced one of the most astonishing paleontological discoveries in Philippine history. In Callao Cave in Cagayan, just at the northern reach of Cordilleran territory, they found the fossilized remains of a previously unknown species of ancient human. They named it Homo luzonensis, and a 2023 study dated its presence on this island to approximately 134,000 years ago. One hundred and thirty-four thousand years. To give you a sense of the scale, that is more than 130,000 years before the Ifugao rice terraces were built. It is more than 133,000 years before the Spanish ever heard the word "Philippines."

Homo luzonensis was small, probably shorter than most of us today, with a surprisingly small brain case and unusual physical features that set it apart from other known human species. It could fashion stone tools. It butchered animals. It survived in the forests and valleys of ancient Luzon in ways we are only beginning to understand. Who exactly this species was, where it came from, and what happened to it remains one of the great unsolved mysteries of human prehistory.

But Homo luzonensis was not alone in this ancient Philippine world.

Even older evidence, stone tools and butchered rhinoceros bones discovered in Rizal, Kalinga, in the northern part of the Cordillera, suggests that some kind of hominin, possibly Homo erectus or an early Denisovan, was living in this region as far back as 709,000 years ago. That is not a typo. Seven hundred and nine thousand years ago, there were beings with human hands doing human things in the land that would one day become Kalinga.

This is your neighborhood's prehistory. And it was already ancient before your story even begins.

Then Came the First Modern Humans

After Homo luzonensis, after the mysterious toolmakers of Kalinga, a new kind of human arrived. These were Homo sapiens, anatomically modern humans, people who looked essentially like us. The oldest confirmed evidence of their presence in the Philippines comes from Tabon Cave in Palawan, where a fragment of skull has been dated to approximately 47,000 years ago. A tibia found during later excavations at the same site pushes the date back even further, to around 47,000 years.

These first modern humans are the ancestors of the people we today know as the Aeta or Negrito peoples of the Philippines. They arrived long before any of the more recent migration waves, and they spread across the archipelago as hunter-gatherers, reading the landscape, learning its rivers and forests, developing the knowledge systems of people who have nowhere to retreat to because they have already arrived at the edge of the world.

Here is where things get even more extraordinary. A major scientific study published in 2021 found that the Aeta Magbukon of the Philippines carry the highest level of Denisovan ancestry ever recorded in any human population in the world, estimated at 30 to 40 percent greater than even the Aboriginal Australians and Papuans who themselves carry significant Denisovan DNA. The Denisovans were an archaic hominin group, cousins of the Neanderthals, who lived across a vast swath of Asia. They were not modern humans, and yet they interbred with the ancestors of modern humans who arrived here.

The implication is breathtaking. When the ancestors of the Aeta arrived in the Philippines, the Denisovans and possibly Homo luzonensis were already here. And they met. And they mixed. The genetic memory of that ancient encounter still lives in Filipino DNA today.

This is the world that existed here before the Austronesians arrived. A world already ancient. Already layered. Already human in ways that science is still struggling to fully read.

Enter the Austronesians. Enter Your Ancestors.

Now we arrive at the chapter most directly connected to who the Igorot people are.

Sometime around 5,000 years ago, a remarkable thing began to happen on an island called Taiwan, known to those ancient people not by that name of course, but as their home. A population of people had been living there, having arrived from the southeastern coast of what is now mainland China perhaps 4,800 years before the common era. These people spoke languages that scholars today classify as proto-Austronesian, the ancestral tongue from which an enormous family of related languages would eventually grow.

And then they began to move.

Why they moved is a question that cannot be answered with certainty. Perhaps populations grew and resources became strained. Perhaps some groups were pushed out by conflict. Perhaps there was something in the Austronesian spirit, some restless, ocean-calling quality, that sent canoes and rafts out into the open sea in search of what lay beyond the horizon. Whatever the reason, they left. And when they left Taiwan, they began one of the greatest human migrations in the history of the species.

The linguist Robert Blust, who dedicated his scholarly life to Austronesian languages, called the Austronesian expansion "one of the greatest chapters in human history." He was not exaggerating. From Taiwan, these people spread in all directions. Southward through the Philippine archipelago. Westward eventually all the way to Madagascar off the coast of Africa. Eastward across the vast Pacific to the islands of Polynesia, reaching what is now New Zealand, Hawaii, and Easter Island. All of this was accomplished not with engines or compasses but with hand-carved boats, knowledge of stars, currents, and winds, and an extraordinary willingness to sail into the unknown.

The mainstream scientific consensus, built on the convergence of linguistic analysis, archaeological evidence, and genetic studies, supports what scholars call the "Out of Taiwan" hypothesis, first articulated by archaeologist Peter Bellwood and linguist Robert Blust. The theory holds that the Austronesian expansion originated in Taiwan and radiated outward, with one of the very first destinations being the northern Philippines.

One genetic study estimated that the agricultural complex associated with Austronesian ancestors began expanding from Taiwan into the Philippines approximately 4,200 years ago. And a 2021 genetic study noted something specifically relevant to the Cordillera. The first wave of Austronesian migration, arriving between roughly 10,000 and 7,000 years ago, brought the ancestors of indigenous groups now living in and around the Cordillera Central mountains of northern Luzon.

Read that again. The ancestors of Cordilleran peoples may represent the first wave of the Austronesian migration into the Philippines. Not a later arrival. Not a secondary group. The vanguard. The first ones through.

Who Were the Austronesians, Really?

Before we go further, let us take a moment to truly see these people. Not as an abstraction. Not as a genetic data set. But as human beings.

The proto-Austronesians were farmers. They cultivated millet and rice. They knew pottery. They understood how to build seafaring watercraft capable of crossing open ocean. Their languages, rich and complex, would eventually become the parent tongue of more than 1,200 languages spoken today across the world, from Malagasy in Madagascar to Malay in Southeast Asia to the languages of Polynesia to the languages of the Philippine highlands including Kankanaey, Ibaloi, Bontoc, Kalinga, and Ifugao.

Think about that kinship. When a Kankanaey elder in Sagada speaks, and when a Maori elder in New Zealand speaks, they are both speaking languages descended from the same ancient mother tongue. The Igorot and the Maori share a common linguistic and genetic ancestor. They are, in the deepest sense, cousins across the Pacific.

The Austronesians were not conquerors in the European colonial sense. They were settlers, explorers, farmers, and fishermen who moved into islands that were in many cases already occupied, mixed with the peoples they found there, and over generations became new peoples shaped by the specific landscapes they settled.

In the Philippines, they encountered the Negrito peoples who had been here for tens of thousands of years. In most parts of the archipelago, genetic mixing occurred over time. But in the Cordillera, something different happened.

The Cordillera as a Refuge and a Forge

A 2014 genetic study found something almost unprecedented. The Kankanaey people of Mountain Province, and by extension other Cordilleran peoples, descend almost entirely from the ancient Austronesian migration that originated in Taiwan around 3,000 to 2,000 BCE. Their genetic ancestry is remarkably homogeneous, with nearly the entire profile matching the component most closely shared with Taiwan's indigenous Ami and Atayal peoples.

This is extraordinary for several reasons.

In most of the Philippines, over thousands of years, populations mixed. Waves of migration from different directions left genetic traces. But in the Cordillera, the mountains themselves acted as a kind of protective wall. The ruggedness of the terrain, the difficulty of access, the fierce independence of the highland peoples, all of these things meant that the Austronesian settlers who came into the mountains early stayed, grew, and became the Cordilleran peoples without the same degree of outside genetic influence that lowland populations experienced.

A separate study noted that unlike lowland Philippine populations which show varying degrees of mixing with pre-Austronesian Negrito groups, Igorot samples show negligible Negrito admixture, suggesting that the Austronesian settlers who moved into the Cordillera highlands did so along pathways or at times that involved relatively little contact with the existing Negrito populations of the lowlands. They arrived in the highlands and the highlands, in turn, kept them.

The Cordillera was not just a place the Igorot happened to end up. The Cordillera made the Igorot. The isolation that outsiders sometimes mistake for backwardness was actually a preservative force, keeping these communities intact, linguistically distinct, culturally rich, and genetically continuous with their ancient Austronesian ancestors across five thousand years of history.

When Did the Igorot Begin Inhabiting the Cordillera?

This is the question every Igorot child should be asking, and the answer, when you really grasp it, is stunning.

The evidence suggests that the Austronesian peoples who would become the Cordilleran highlanders began arriving in the northern Luzon mountains somewhere between 5,000 and 4,000 years ago. Some genetic research suggests an even earlier wave, as far back as 7,000 to 10,000 years ago, may have laid the foundational population of the region.

To put 5,000 years in human terms, that is roughly 200 generations of people. Two hundred grandmothers and grandfathers, each handing something on to the next. The knowledge of which plants heal and which harm. The proper way to observe a ceremony. The architecture of a rice terrace wall. The language with its specific clicks and tones and grammar built for describing mountains rather than seas. All of it passed hand to hand across two centuries of centuries.

By the time the Spanish arrived in the 16th century and began sending expeditions toward the Cordillera in search of gold, first hearing of the mineral wealth of the highlands around 1574, the Igorot peoples had already been in those mountains for at least 4,000 years. The terraces. The governance systems. The trade networks. The oral histories. All of it already ancient before a single European boot ever touched Cordilleran soil.

The Spanish could not conquer them. Historians note that the Igorot repelled over 150 documented Spanish campaigns across three centuries. The mountains that had preserved their genetic lineage also preserved their freedom.

The Full Human Lineage, From Deep Time to Today

Let us now draw the full picture together.

709,000 years ago, an unknown hominin, possibly related to the Denisovans or Homo erectus, is making stone tools and hunting rhinoceros in what will one day be Kalinga.

134,000 years ago, Homo luzonensis is living in Callao Cave at the edge of Cordilleran territory, a distinct species of human found nowhere else on Earth.

47,000 years ago, the first anatomically modern humans, the ancestors of the Aeta and Negrito peoples, arrive in the Philippines and eventually encounter the archaic humans already here, mixing with them in ways whose genetic echoes are still detectable today.

7,000 to 10,000 years ago, the first waves of proto-Austronesian people, moving southward out of the Taiwan-southern China corridor, begin arriving in northern Luzon.

5,000 to 4,000 years ago, the Austronesian agricultural settlers who will become the Cordilleran peoples are moving into the highland interior, bringing rice, pottery, and their ancient mother tongue into the mountains, and the mountains begin the long, slow work of shaping them into something new, something that will one day be called Igorot.

Over 2,000 years ago, the Ifugao begin carving the rice terraces that will one day be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, engineering one of the most sophisticated agricultural systems in the ancient world.

1574, the Spanish hear about Igorot gold and want it badly. They will spend the next three hundred years failing to take it by force.

Today, approximately 1.8 million Igorot people carry that entire story in their blood, their languages, their practices, and their mountains.

What Does It Mean to Be This Old?

Here is what I want you to sit with.

You are not a recent people. You are not a people who were pushed into the mountains by lowland conquest. The science suggests you were in those mountains before many of the lowland groups even arrived. You were not the ones who got left behind. You were the ones who got there first, built a civilization in one of the most demanding terrains in Southeast Asia, and stayed.

Your languages are part of one of the world's great language families, connecting you in ancestral kinship with peoples from Madagascar to New Zealand. Your genetic profile is so remarkably pure in its Austronesian inheritance that scientists use the Kankanaey specifically as a reference point for studying what an original Austronesian population looks like after 5,000 years of highland isolation.

Your ancestors survived encounters with Denisovans, with Homo luzonensis, with waves of migration that reshaped the rest of the archipelago, with centuries of Spanish military campaigns, with American colonization, with every attempt the outside world made to define, contain, or erase them.

And yet here you are. Speaking languages that descend from the oldest human migration story in Southeast Asia. Farming terraces built on a mountainside that was once a seafloor. Reading the world with eyes shaped by ten thousand years of watching clouds move over peaks that your grandmothers' grandmothers' grandmothers also watched.

You are ancient. You are specific. You are irreplaceable.

And the mountains you call home have always known exactly who you are.
